FAQs
The Village Pantry will be a welcoming, community-led space offering surplus food, refills and local products with dignity and care.
The Pantry is open to everyone, and volunteers play a vital role in making it a supportive, fair and respectful place.
What this role involves:
• Welcoming people into The Village Pantry and helping create a friendly, inclusive atmosphere
• Explaining how the Pantry works and answering questions clearly and kindly
• Supporting people to choose items within agreed guidance so the offer remains fair for all
• Assisting with refill stations for dry goods and liquids
• Using the point of sale (POS) system to put refills and local products through the till (full training provided)
• Supporting people who may feel unsure or anxious when accessing the Pantry
• Keeping the space clean, calm and welcoming during sessions
All volunteers will receive:
• A full Pantry induction
• Food safety training
• Training on the point of sale (POS) system
• Guidance on dignity-led support, inclusion and boundaries
• Safeguarding awareness (with enhanced training for Shift Leads)
• Ongoing support from the Vital Village team
Our aim is for The Village Pantry to feel welcoming, respectful and community-led — and for volunteering to feel supported, valued and well-organised.
What skills do I need?
This role is ideal for you if you
• Enjoy interacting with people and putting others at ease
• Are patient, calm and non-judgemental
• Are happy following guidance and using simple systems once trained
Time commitment • Typically 2–3 hour shifts during opening hours

What the role involves:
Collecting surplus food from local food businesses
Transporting food safely back to Vital Village
Logging collections and flagging any issues
Coordinating with the Pantry team around timings and storage needs
What we provide:
Clear collection routes and guidance
Food safety training
Reimbursement for mileage and reasonable expenses
What skills do I need?
This role is ideal for you
If you have access to a car and are happy to drive locally
Are reliable and comfortable working independently
Can commit to regular or ad-hoc collections, normally in the evenings
Please note we will also check driving licence status.

Leading a Pantry session and supporting other volunteers
Being the main point of contact during a shift
Ensuring food safety, safeguarding and inclusion standards are followed
Supporting volunteers with questions or challenges
Handling any difficult situations calmly and respectfully
Feeding back to the Pantry Coordinator after sessions
What we provide:

Training on the point of sale (POS) system
Guidance on dignity-led support, inclusion and boundaries
Safeguarding awareness (with enhanced training for Shift Leads)
Ongoing support from the Vital Village team

Willingness to complete safeguarding training
Previous experience in volunteering, community work or customer-facing roles helpful
Time commitment
1–2 sessions per week (flexible)

Receiving surplus food collected that day
Checking food quality and dates in line with food safety guidance
Sorting food into appropriate storage (fridge, freezer and shelves)
Labelling, rotating stock and recording what’s come in
Preparing the Pantry ready for the next opening session
What we provide:
A full Pantry induction
Food safety training
Training on the point of sale (POS) system
Guidance on dignity-led support, inclusion and boundaries
Safeguarding awareness (with enhanced training for Shift Leads)
Ongoing support from the Vital Village team
What skills do I need?
This role is ideal for you if you prefer practical, behind-the-scenes tasks
Like being organised and methodical
Are comfortable following food safety processes (training provided)
Time commitment
Evening shifts, usually 1.5–2 hours
