A Taste of Something New at The Village Pantry

This week, something rather special arrived at the Vital Village Community Hub: our very first delivery from The Country Food Trust, bringing pheasant curry and partridge curry to our Village Pantry shelves.
It might sound like a small thing - a few boxes of curry arriving at a community hub in Thames Ditton. But for us, it marks an important step in how we think about feeding our community.
Why This Partnership Matters
Since opening the Village Pantry, we've been on a mission to find good food in places others might not think to look. Good food doesn't always come from where you'd expect - sometimes it means high-quality, restaurant-grade meals that would otherwise never reach a plate at all. The Country Food Trust specialises in exactly that: taking game meat that would otherwise go to waste and transforming it into nutritious, ready-to-eat meals for communities like ours.
It's the kind of collaboration we love - one that's a little unexpected, genuinely innovative, and rooted in the same values that drive everything we do at the Pantry: nothing should go to waste, and good food should reach the people who need it.
We're proud to be widening our network of food partners this way. The more creative we get about where good food can come from - farms, producers, and trusts we wouldn't have thought to approach a year ago - the more we can offer our community, and the more resilient our Pantry becomes.
Who Are The Country Food Trust?
The Country Food Trust is a food poverty charity with a wonderfully practical mission: turning British game meat — pheasant, partridge, and venison — into nutritious, ready-to-eat meals for people who need them most. Their thinking starts from a simple observation: protein is usually the most expensive part of any meal, and so it's often the first thing to disappear from a tight food
budget - even though it's one of the most important food groups for health. Rather than accept that gap, they set out to close it.

What makes their approach so effective is where the meat comes from. Much of it is donated from shooting estates, but a growing share now comes from deer management and conservation culls around the country. The UK has a deer population that, left unchecked, causes real damage - stripping woodlands, preventing tree regeneration, and harming the biodiversity that depends on healthy forests. Culling is a necessary part of managing that balance, but it used to mean a lot of good meat going to waste. The Country Food Trust turns that problem into a solution twice over: supporting conservation efforts that protect British woodlands, while turning the resulting venison, pheasant, and partridge into meals for families who need them. It's the kind of joined-up thinking we deeply admire - using one challenge to solve another.
The meals themselves are designed with food banks and pantries in mind. Each pouch is pressure-cooked and sealed, giving it a 12-month shelf life with no need for refrigeration - ideal for organisations like ours that don't have unlimited freezer space, and for households without reliable access to a fridge or cooker. Since launching, the Trust has produced hundreds of thousands of meals, distributed through food banks, community kitchens, and national networks, reaching people in need right across the country.
This is precisely why we're so proud of this collaboration. It is a partnership with an organisation whose entire model is built around turning waste into wellbeing, and we're delighted to now be part of the network of community organisations they support.
A Reminder: How the Village Pantry Works
As we welcome new partners and new menus to our shelves, we want to take this moment to remind everyone how the Pantry works. Meals like this week's pheasant and partridge curries are given to our community completely free of charge - no cost, no catch, and no means-testing at the door. We exist because we believe good food and dignity shouldn't depend on what's in your pocket.

Alongside our free meals, we also offer a small range of dry goods on refill at low cost, so you can top up store-cupboard staples affordably and without unnecessary packaging. Together, these two strands of the Pantry mean there's something for everyone, whatever your circumstances. None of this would be possible without support from our community, and we gratefully accept donations to help us keep the Pantry running and growing.
What's Next
This is just the beginning of our work with The Country Food Trust, and we're excited to see what future deliveries bring to the Pantry shelves. If you haven't visited yet, pop in and see what's on offer this week - you might be surprised by what you find.
And if you know a local farm, producer, or food business that might have surplus to share, we'd love to hear from you. Building a community pantry takes a village - and we're always looking to grow ours.
The Village Pantry is open Mon-Fri 9am-1pm at the Vital Village Community Hub, Thames Ditton - Mercer Close KT7 0BS. Meals like this week's curries are provided completely free of charge, with dry goods available on refill at low cost.
